Outreach

A robotics team is more than a robot. We run events for our school, show up for our community, and try to get younger kids to pick up a controller. Here's what that looked like last season.

Family Day

Two weeks into the season we opened the shop to families. Parents and siblings watched the programmers get the chassis driving, helped build a goal ramp and a test station, and then everyone went outside to drive on the giant map on the court.

It's the first time most families see what a Saturday build day looks like, and it's the day we recruit the most volunteers.

Solar Science Day

A community science day on campus: solar telescopes on the lawn, a meteorites table, the county library's STEAM Machine bus, and us. We drove the chassis on the pavement all afternoon and handed the controller to anyone who asked, which was a lot of eight-year-olds.

A Go2 robot dog from another exhibitor came over to say hello. Our chassis held its ground.

Game Night

Our fundraiser in the Forum: retro games on the big screen, ping-pong, snacks and drinks for sale, and a small entry fee. Open to the whole high school.

The part we're proudest of happened before the doors opened. We didn't guess at a ticket price; we modeled attendance and costs and ran the simulation ten thousand times to find where we'd break even. Then we picked a price with room to spare. The night paid for itself and then some.

National Robotics Summit

As part of the National Robotics Summit, one of our members spoke with a Maryland representative about what students get out of FIRST and what school robotics programs need to keep going. It's a short conversation to have from a robotics shop on a Saturday, and a good one.
